Gary Nelson, Chairman & CEO of Nelson, the
largest independent staffing firm in Northern California, was recognized in
Staffing Industry Review’s recent article “The 10 Most Intriguing People in
Staffing”. The prestigious list also includes Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who in
2008 established a staffing company focused on helping minorities find work, and
Joyce Russell, who started off as a Branch Manager for Adecco and is now the
President & COO of Adecco General Staffing USA.
Nelson’s story is impressive—and inspiring. He was raised in Modesto, California,
by a single mom. He was the first person in his family to graduate from high
school and attend college. He remained determined, and his forward thinking,
creativity and passion formed the foundation for his business success. In 1970,
he established Gary Nelson and Associates with $10,000, 250 square feet of Marin
County office space and just one other person. Today, the company recognizes
annual revenue of over $300 million and has 30 offices across seven business
divisions. Says the Chairman, “There was no grand plan. It just kind of evolved”.
As a note, in the midst of a struggling economy, Nelson’s business recently
jumped in rank from the 64th largest staffing company in the United States to
the 44th largest, according to a recent Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) report.
“The Largest Staffing Firms in the U.S.” list is published each year and
includes only companies whose annual U.S. staffing revenue exceeds $1 million.
Nelson’s company was originally a consulting practice, but when he recognized a
growing need for staffing, he seized the opportunity. He was also the visionary
behind the development of the company’s WorkforceLogic division. WorkforceLogic
provides over 85 companies—many of them major U.S. multi-national
operations—with a wide range of services, including employment law compliance,
risk mitigation, workforce management and vendor management services.
Nelson is passionate about the staffing industry. “It’s rewarding to see that
solid teamwork and prudent planning continue to generate meaningful results,” he
says. His dedication and experience have earned him recognition as an industry
expert. He is regularly asked to speak at human resource-related events and
conferences and has shared the stage with many leaders and dignitaries,
including Dr. Henry Kissinger, Lloyd Bentsen and Scott Cook of Intuit.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Nelson is recognized in his community as an activist and
philanthropist. His many pursuits in this arena include spearheading efforts to open and support public
charter schools, and along with his wife Marcia, establishing the Gary and Marcia Nelson Emergency Care Fund
in support of emergency room services in Sonoma Valley.
